I have now attempted to insert a Babel fish four times. Each time it slides out immediately. I have tried tilting my head. I have tried holding it in place for thirty seconds before releasing. I have tried warming it up first. The fish seems uninterested in translation and quite interested in returning to its tank. Is there a technique?

1Ford Prefect Published 1 month ago (350 points)The trick is to warm it up first under a lamp for about thirty seconds — cold Babel fish resist insertion. Then tilt the head sharply to the right and insert in one decisive motion without hesitating. Any hesitation and the fish senses it and starts pushing back. Do not try to negotiate with the fish.

I was in the middle of a complicated argument about astrophysics and managed to seat it correctly on the first try, possibly because I wasn't thinking about it.
