I was having a perfectly normal Thursday when a Vogon constructor fleet appeared and demolished my house to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Apparently there was a notice in the local planning office, but I have never been to the local planning office. Is this the sort of thing that is supposed to happen on a Thursday?

You should have checked the planning notice — it has been on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying Beware of the Leopard. More importantly, the Earth itself is scheduled for demolition in approximately twelve minutes for the same bypass. I strongly suggest you grab your towel. I have a ship.
