Designing a new planet — taking fjord suggestions

Published 1 month agoby Slartibartfast
Magrathea is taking commissions again. I am in the early design phase for a new Class-M world and find myself returning to my great passion: fjords. If you have a favourite fjord, valley, or dramatic coastal feature from any world — now extant or otherwise — I would be very glad to hear about it. I am particularly interested in texture and afternoon light.

The Cairngorms had some excellent valleys before the demolition. Very dramatic when there was weather, and the light in late afternoon was exactly what you are describing — long and horizontal, picking out the texture of the rock. I am sorry they are gone.

Everything on Betelgeuse VII comes out too sharp in the design phase. The world has a structural tendency toward jagged — dramatic on paper, unpleasant to walk near. Recommend Broop Kidron Seven for texture reference: the continental folds there have an organic quality that reads as ancient without being aggressive.
